Abuja: A boat carrying victims from a flooded area in Nigeria capsized, resulting in the drowning of 76 people, while only 9 people were rescued alive.
According to the World News Agency, the worst flood in ten years has caused widespread destruction in the West African country of Nigeria. 29 out of 36 states were badly affected by the floods, in which a total of 300 people died and more than 100,000 were displaced.
Flood victims in Anbra state suffered a double punishment. The boat carrying the flood victims to safety capsized in the water and 85 people drowned in the water out of which only 9 could be saved alive while 76 people lost their lives.
The spokesman of the rescue organization says that the boat sank due to overcrowding of passengers. Several such incidents have taken place in the flood-affected states, but this is the first incident of the highest loss of life.
It should be noted that crops in Nigeria have been completely destroyed by floods, which has created the fear of food shortage. Livestock were also washed away in the floods and about one lakh houses were completely or partially destroyed.
