Women\’s Sports In Pakistan

Participating in sports greatly benefits a person’s physical, mental, and social well-being. Women\’s sports are just as important as men\’s. Women who play sports tend to have better health and stronger personalities. They are also more empowered and financially stable compared to other women.

Women\’s participation in sports

Many women and girls in Pakistan see sports as just hobbies or extra activities, so they don\’t participate much. Around 90% of them don\’t take part in sports or other physical activities. The most popular sports for women are cricket, followed by badminton, biking, tennis, and table tennis. But what stops women from making sports their career?

  • Religious factors
  • Cultural factors
  • Socioeconomic factors
  • Gender inequality
  • Lack of access to facilities and opportunities
  • Lack of media coverage

Religious factors

While many studies say religion might stop women from playing sports. The results from the SCSRFQ show it doesn\’t. To fix this, people should question and change the hidden and misleading rules about Islam.

Cultural factors

In our culture, women are often expected to focus on household chores and taking care of children. While men are encouraged to engage in outdoor activities like sports. Many parents worry about what others will think if their daughters pursue sports professionally, so they don\’t support them. Even if a girl does get to play sports, she might face problems like peer pressure, body image issues, and health challenges. To help change this, the media should show the benefits of women playing sports and raise awareness about its importance.

Socioeconomic factors

Girls often don\’t have many chances to play sports in schools or colleges. Their families might not have enough money to send them to sports academies, and playgrounds are often too far away. Families may not afford transportation to these places either. But if schools and colleges offer more opportunities for girls to play sports, it can encourage them to participate more.

Gender inequality

In Pakistan, women face gender inequality in many parts of life, including sports. While gender equality is accepted worldwide, there\’s a big gap between accepting it and actually making it happen. Men\’s sports get more attention than women\’s. Only 10 Pakistani women participated in the Olympics from 1896 to 2016, showing how few women get to join in sports. This happens because men have more facilities, media coverage, and chances than women. Women need to stand up and demand their rights in this society where men usually have more power.

Lack of access to facilities and opportunities

In our country, men have more resources for sports than women, so women get fewer chances. Female athletes don\’t get as much attention and praise. Women\’s participation in sports is still starting because there aren\’t enough playgrounds, mentors, coaches, or equipment for certain games. Many talented women can\’t follow their dreams because there isn\’t enough money for women\’s competitions. For example, in 2020, the Pakistan Cricket Board spent only 5% of its budget on women and 19% on men. Also, male athletes get paid a lot more than female athletes for matches.

Lack of media coverage

The media has a big impact on how many women play sports. One major issue is that there\’s not enough media coverage of women\’s sports. The media mostly focuses on famous male athletes and their games and lives. There aren\’t many female role models shown. Even though Pakistan has many talented female athletes who have made the country proud. They don\’t get enough attention and praise. To fix this, the media should start showing more female athletes who have done well in sports. This could inspire fans and regular people, and more families might support their daughters, sisters, and wives in making careers in sports. Also, women should speak up for their rights in this society where men usually have more power.

But even with all these problems, female athletes in Pakistan are really good and have made the country proud in competitions around the world. To really support women in sports, we need to make sure they get the same money, facilities, and opportunities as men.
