Oil dealers on Monday warned that petrol pumps in Islamabad and Rawalpindi may soon run out of fuel.
The government has shut down the twin cities amid protests by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Major roads in the capital have been sealed off as the PTI convoy advances towards the city. A heavy contingent of security forces has been deployed and schools across the city have been declared closed on Monday.
He warned that the current stock of fuel would be depleted unless the supply was restored on the same day.
The Petroleum Division has taken notice of the increasing shortage of fuel in the twin cities. In a circular issued on Monday, it directed dealers to ensure uninterrupted supply of petrol.
Meanwhile, travel restrictions in Lahore and other parts of the country have adversely affected the supply chain, causing prices of perishable goods, especially fruits and vegetables, to rise sharply.
Potato prices rose sharply, with soft-skinned A-grade varieties officially pegged at Rs 127-135 per kg but selling at Rs 180-200 per kg in the markets. Similarly, B and C grade potatoes, along with mixed grade varieties, were sold well above the government fixed rates.
Onion prices also increased, with A grade onion retailing at Rs 180-200 per kg, much higher than the official price limit of Rs 135-145 per kg.
Tomatoes, another essential commodity, faced severe inflationary pressures. A-grade tomatoes were sold at Rs 300-340 per kg, almost double the government-fixed price of Rs 170-180 per kg.
