Karachi: Pakistan on Wednesday achieved a major milestone with the inauguration of its first Maritime Science and Technology Park (PMSTP) in Karachi. The initiative was launched during the International Defense Exhibition and Seminar (IDEAS) 2024 under the chairmanship of Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf. The facility is expected to play a game-changing role in addressing the country’s economic challenges and promoting its blue economy.
According to a press release by the Pakistan Navy, PMSTP is the country’s first maritime science park that integrates academic, industry and government collaboration. The park will serve as a hub for innovation in areas such as maritime technologies, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, marine renewable energy, seafood processing, shipbuilding and coastal tourism.
Bahria said, “PMSTP is envisioned as a transformative hub for innovation and growth, which will be my key to powering Pakistan’s blue economy. Time focuses on science and technology.” There are already plans to expand the project beyond Karachi to other cities including Islamabad, Lahore and Gwadar.
Harnessing Maritime Potential
As a country with strategic access to the Arabian Sea and numerous ports, Pakistan aims to leverage its maritime assets to enhance its economic growth. Ports employ thousands of people in industries such as fishing, shipping and tourism. PMSTP is expected to play an important role in advancing these sectors and addressing economic challenges.
Ideas 2024: A platform for innovation
The inauguration coincided with Ideas 2024, Pakistan’s premier defense expo held biennially since its inception in 2000 under the leadership of General (retd) Pervez Musharraf. This year’s event, which runs from November 19 to 22, hosts more than 550 exhibitors, including 340 international defense companies and senior civil and military officials from 55 countries.
Ideas has evolved into a key event for the defense industry, showcasing innovation and fostering partnerships. The addition of PMSTP underscores Pakistan’s commitment to technological advancement and economic growth through the naval and defense sectors.
By combining technology, research and industrial collaboration, the Maritime Science and Technology Park is poised to position Pakistan as a regional leader in maritime innovation and sustainable economic development.
