In our society, girls are still considered a burden and they are given equal opportunities to move forward in the race of life including health, education and employment. 90% of the abandoned and destitute children residing in the Child Protection Bureau of Lahore are girls who are struggling to move forward in life.
Fourteen-year-old Farah is from Lahore, but she has been living in the Child Protection Bureau of Lahore for the past 7 years. She is living here with one of her sisters, with dreams of a better future in her eyes.
Farah, while talking to Rep. Express, said that her mother is dead while she does not know anything about her father. It was their uncle who admitted the two sisters to the Child Protection Bureau here, while their twin brothers live with their uncle, their brother and uncle visit them every week. Farah added that she wants to study and become a scientist.
Another 15-year-old Mehwish, based at the Child Protection and Welfare Bureau, told Express that he had no knowledge of his family. All she remembers is that her stepmother entrusted her to the neighbors and said that she would return by evening, but after so many years, her mother did not return, she still looks for her mother. Mehwish said that she used to go to school but when my mother did not come back, the neighbors stopped sending me to school and left me here. Now I am studying here. I have joined the first year this year.
There are many conditions and reasons including economic hardship, separation of parents and death of parents due to which families and relatives do not accept girls and they are left destitute.
In this regard, Child Protection and Welfare Bureau Chairperson Sarah Ahmed said that 90% of the children living in the Bureau are girls.
Speaking to Express, Sara Ahmed said that it is our misfortune that some people still think that sons will support their old age and the family, while daughters are a burden. Many people leave daughters in hospitals as soon as they are born. If someone throws it in a road or park.
He said that there are many girls in the bureau who were abandoned by their relatives outside the bureau. He said that most of the children living in the Child Protection Bureau are girls. In the Child Protection Bureau, these abandoned and destitute girls are given food, shelter and education, and are also taught to be wise.
