Bathysphere World’s First Deep-Sea Exploration Vessel

On the afternoon of September 22, 1932, a sensational live broadcast captivated viewers in the UK and the United States. Hundreds of feet below the surface of the ocean, within a little steel sphere, was where the broadcast was coming from. Otis Barton, the inventor, and naturalist William Beebe were imprisoned inside the sphere he created.

Beebe was able to vividly explain the magnificent marine life that swam past the tiny quartz glass of the sphere thanks to a phone system provided by Bell Laboratories. \”A school of brilliantly illuminated jellyfish with pale green lights came within three feet of [our] window,\” he exclaimed with excitement. It is the most bright light I have ever seen.

At a depth of 1,500 feet below the surface, Beebe and Barton were undertaking the deepest ocean dive in recorded history and communicating their experiences. This risky voyage captured the attention of people all over the world and offered previously unheard-of glimpses into the wonders of the deep sea.
