The European Commission and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) have lifted the ban on Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flights to Europe and reopened key routes for the national carrier.
In 2020, EASA imposed the ban following a PIA plane crash in Karachi that killed nearly 100 people and was followed by fake The pilot license scandal came to light. These problems limited the airline’s operations on profitable routes to Europe and the UK.
Aviation Minister Khawaja Asif announced the development on Friday, calling it “an important day” in a post on X. He noted that Air Blue was also issued a third country operator’s permit, adding that this decision was made possible due to the efforts of the Ministry of Aviation. Strengthen the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) and align its safety oversight with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.
He said, “Our government has taken important steps to strengthen the PCAA, including implementation of the PCAA Act, smooth separation of regulator and service providers, appointment of professional leadership, and capacity building training. “
Asif thanked the European Commission and EASA for conducting a transparent process and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to ensure aviation safety.
