At least nine people, including five children, have been killed in a shooting at a school in central Russia, investigators said.
The motive for Monday’s shooting in Izhevsk, the capital of Udmurtia region, about 970 kilometers (600 miles) east of Moscow, was unclear, according to international media. Officials said the attacker committed “suicide”.
Russia’s Investigative Committee said on Telegram that the attacker killed nine people before committing suicide. He said that the victims included five children, two teachers and two security guards.
In a video statement, Adamurtia Governor Alexander Brechlov said the unidentified gunman shot himself.
The Admirtia branch of the Interior Ministry said that the police recovered the body of the gunman from the scene.
The school caters to children between grades 1 and 11. It has been evacuated and the area around it has been cordoned off, the governor said.
According to media reports, Russia has seen a number of school shootings in recent years.
In May 2021, a young gunman killed seven children and two adults in the city of Kazan. In April 2022, a gunman killed two children and a teacher at a kindergarten in the central Ilyansk region before committing suicide.
